History of Charleston

Charleston’s history is one of the longest of all communities in the USA. It starts from 1670, the beginning of the colonization

The restoration of Charles II of England, Scotland and Ireland to the British throne following the fall of Oliver’s Cromwell Protectorate , brought to the king’s entourage good news. The restored king offered in 1663 territory of North Carolina to 8 of his loyal friends, known as the Lord Proprietors. 7 years after this distribution, the first Lord was ready to begin the colonization of Charles town. This community was established in 1670 by English on the west bank of the Ashley River. This town was later chosen by Lord Anthony Ashley-Cooper to become a ‘great port towne’.

Within 10 years, the settlement has grown , with the participation of other people from England , Barbados and Virginia. Charleston eventually became the capital of the Carolina colony. The settlement’s geographical position may have favoured trade, but simultaneously it made it very vulnerable to raids, pirate attacks, invasions from both sea and land. Attacks from the Spanish and the French. Resistance from the Natives and all these kinds of attacks, made the colonists built a fortification wall for protection from all kinds of danger

By the 1850s Charleston had become a major trade center. By 1770 it ranked 4th in the largest ports in USA after Boston, NY, Philadelphia. With a moderate for that times population of 11,000 , with approximately half of them being slaves. Rice and Indigo were being cultivated
